About Us

The Women’s Boston Gay Basketball League WBGBL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the Greater Boston area that operates a recreational basketball league with one level of play for new and returning players of various skill levels, including former collegiate athletes and the occasional pick up player. Each year, players from diverse backgrounds join the WBGBL to build community through basketball.

The WBGBL season runs from January to April of each year. Games are played on Sundays at Emmanuel College’s Jean Yawkey Center located in The Fenway, Boston.

Established in 2002, the league was founded on principles of diversity, equal opportunity, and respect, with a special emphasis on the participation of the LGBTQ+ community. We take pride in creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all players.

Not everyone is gay! As hard as this is to believe, it's the truth. The WBGBL loves our allies! We have many people in the league who don't identify as a part of the queer community and we welcome them as players, captains, and fans regardless of who they love.

The WBGBL recognizes the historical inequities and barriers to accessing sports for women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people of color. The league seeks to address these historical challenges through policies and practices of acceptance, diversity, and inclusion, as well as promoting sport, camaraderie, and the visibility of marginalized athletes. The WBGBL values diversity, and embraces all members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community.
