WHO WE ARE
The Boston Gay Basketball League is an organization in the greater Boston area free from discrimination on the basis of race, religion, creed, gender identity, gender expression, national origin or sexual orientation, with special emphasis on the participation of the LGBTQ community. It is a recreational league founded on diversity, equal opportunity and respect, and prides itself on establishing and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
WHY WE DO IT
Historically, there has been decreased access to sports for women, members of the LGBTQ community and people of color. Not only does the league seek to alleviate those barriers, but we believe there is value in diversity – both for the league and for those who play in it. In the hopes of addressing historical inequities in sport, the WBGBL is a league that embraces all members of the LGBTQ community, whether one identifies as a woman or was born one. The league promotes sportsmanship and camaraderie and strives to eliminate negative stereotypes associated with LGBTQ athletics. Beginners are always welcome, as are players of all experience. In conclusion, as an LGBTQ community organization not pursuing amateur or professional standards of play, our policy reflects a model of acceptance and inclusivity.
